‘If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs……………….then probably you’ve underestimated the seriousness of the situation!’ – Jean Kerr (Please Don’t Eat the Daisies)
There are many areas of the painting still to resolve so another 9 hour studio session, but a welcome means of blotting out the perilous and serious plight of my beloved football team after another bad result on Tuesday evening. Spirits are low. The painting may have its problems, but together with many other long suffering supporters of WWFC I’m experiencing that feeling of déjà vu again.
It’s said that dogs often display characteristics of their owners, but perhaps a comparison can be made between supporters and their football clubs too. Although I missed their heady days of the ’50’s when WWFC were the strongest team in Europe, it’s an interesting coincidence that during my lifetime their fortunes have also been reflected in my circumstances. They’ve had their moderate successes, nothing particularly outstanding, but promising starts have more often fallen short rather than triumphed and there was a time when failure followed failure in such magnitude that the club almost disappeared completely. However when they’ve been knocked down, they’ve got up again. From adversity gradually they clawed their way back. To paraphrase the club maxim, out of darkness came light. Yet whenever the future has suggested signs of promise and possibilities, inevitably disappointment always seems to reappear.
Looks like it’s back to the drawing board for my boys and starting again, again. Another rebuild is required. It’s a funny old game – football. And life.
